Dr. Murray Jacobson

Veterinarian

Education: Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan

Dr. Jacobson has been with the clinic for over 30 years serving the Ponoka area. He has an interest for surgeries and large animal medicine. You can often find him heading out to farm calls through out the area.

Dr. Clayton West

Veterinarian

Education: Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan

Dr. West has been a part of the team for over 20 years and has dedicated many hours to the clinic. His main interest are soft tissue surgery and small/large animal medicine.

Dr. Moniek Okkema

Veterinarian

Education: Western College of Veterinary Medicine

Hometown: Vermilion, AB

Pets: Dobbe and Ginny - Friesian Stabij

Dr. Moniek graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2019. She grew up on a dairy farm turned cow-calf operation in Eastern Alberta. She has two horses, Pepper and Alice, and she looks forward to having them move to town with her. She loves all things great and small and is very excited to add some small ruminant health care to our team as well as pursuing the usual. She looks forward to meeting with your large and small animals.

Dr. Austin Jacobson

Veterinarian

Dr. Austin Jacobson was born and raised on a farm just north of Ponoka. Upon graduation, he attended both Queen’s University and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. After completing his DVM, he went on to work at the Lloydminster Animal Hospital for 2 years, before returning to Ponoka. Austin now lives in Ponoka with his wife Lauren, and their Goldendoodle, Joe. He enjoys both large and small animal medicine with bovine being his top interest. In his spare time you can find him on the golf course and helping on the family farm. You may also recognize Austin’s last name, that he shares with another one of our vets.

Dr. Gráinne Pierse

Veterinarian

Education: University of Calgary - Veterinary Medicine

Hometown: Edmonton,AB

Pets: BooBoo - Cat. Daisy - Highland Cow

Dr. Grainne (gr-on-yuh) graduated from the University of Calgary Veterinary Medicine Program in 2018 when she joined our team. She is originally from Edmonton but has always loved small towns and has a passion for cattle work. Her goals are to provide the best care for your beloved pets, with her knowledge and compassion for every animal that comes through our doors. She also has a passion for beef herd health and will be happy to help you on both the feedlot and cow-calf side of management. Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her husband and 2 children, curling, swimming and heading to the mountains. During calving season you will find her working at home, helping calve out on her own cow-calf operation. You may have noticed she has taken a step back from work life to start a family over the past couple years. We are excited to welcome her back soon!

Tanya Graduated with a Diploma in the Animal Health Program from Fairview college in 1999 and has been practicing as a technologist since. She has always had a passion for animals. After graduation she has worked in both mixed animal and small animal practices. She has a Heeler Cross – who is obsessed with his ball, named Borrk. Even after all the years in the business she still has her passion to help animals. She looks forward to meeting you and your pets or livestock!

Sianna Abt

RVT

Education: Lakeland College - Vermillion

Hometown: Ponoka, AB

Pets: Flynn, Lola and Lexa - Dogs. Biggie and Willard - Cats. Rupert and Rango - Pygmy Goats

She graduated from the Animal Health Technology Program at Lakeland College in 2017. After working for a short time in Airdrie, she moved back to Ponoka and joined our team. She is passionate about all aspects of our mixed animal practice, so much she has an array of animals at home as well. Sianna and her husband are involved in a feedlot operation, cow-calf and have horses. She spends most of her free time helping around the family farm and camping in the summer.

Pets: Chewbarka - Wheaten Terrier

Brook Graduated from the Veterinary Technician Program at Olds College in 2020. She is from Rocky Mountain House, and enjoys exploring the great outdoors! Brook is very passionate about our furry family members, as well as the cattle aspect of our mixed animal practice. She can’t wait to meet you and your pets!

Kendra Sutley

Hometown: Bashaw, AB

Pets: Poppy - Domestic Shorthair Cat

Kendra graduated in the Animal Health Technology program from Olds College in 2022. She is from Bashaw and grew up with a small sheep operation. In her spare time you will find her outdoors golfing and soaking up the sun. She has a passion for our small and large four-legged friends and can’t wait to meet them all!

Julie Edwards

RVT

Julie graduated from the Animal Health Technology Program at Olds College in 2023. She joined our team doing her 6 week practicum and decided to stay! She enjoys the variety of working with all different species in a mixed practice. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her dogs and 2 horses.

Ashley Ijtsma

RVT

Ashley graduated from the Animal Health Technician program at Lakeland College in August 2024. Upon completing her schooling she completed a practicum at Ponoka Veterinary Clinic and ended up joining the clinic staff shortly after. She is originally from Crossfield, Alberta, where her family owns and operates a 450 cow dairy farm. Due to her experience and knowledge growing up, she has a special interest in working with cattle but likes the variety of all species. Outside of work she enjoys synchronized figure skating and heading home to help on the farm.

Maria grew up on a hobby farm in Alberta and has had a passion for animals from a young age. This has led her to her dream job – working in a veterinary clinic. She is likely the voice you hear on the phone and the face you see when you come in. She is looking forward to continuing to build relationships with the clients and their animals. When not helping clients at the front desk, she spends time with her family/friends and her 2 dogs, Jadie and Max. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time in the outdoors, doing sports – especially volleyball and practicing the piano.

Brenda Hemeyer

Hometown: Ponoka, AB

Pets: Zigger

Brenda was born and raised in Ponoka and has been working at veterinary clinics for over 27 years. Brenda has a very friendly cow-calf operation. You can find her taking her dog for a walk around the farm and giving her cows a scratch in her spare time. She has had a passion for animals all her life and enjoys their companionship and love.
